If the historic square feels a touch quieter this August, there is a reason. The McKinney Performing Arts Center went dark on February 1 for a $10 million renovation, with reopening estimated for fall 2026. That single closure has pushed a lot of the month's live programming south along State Highway 121, where free Friday concerts, a night market, and a run of new restaurants have quietly reshaped where residents spend a weekend. The square still anchors the calendar. It just isn't carrying it alone right now.
Here is what a McKinney resident can actually do this month, and what is about to open next.
The square is holding down heritage, not headliners
The Courtroom Theater is closed, but the surrounding blocks are not. The McKinney Farmers Market runs every Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon, at Chestnut Square on South Chestnut Street, with a first-Saturday heritage series continuing through November that layers guided village tours and community programming on top of the usual vendors.
Inside the McKinney Cotton Mill at 610 Elm Street, the Atrium Fine Art Gallery is showing the America 250: Texas Trailblazing Wonder Women exhibition through August 30. Twenty-five large-scale original works, each dedicated to a Texas woman who shaped the state's history. Weekday hours run 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., weekends 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The single most photographed August event on the square is the third annual downtown car show on August 15, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., with 150 classic cars parked around the courthouse. If out-of-town family is visiting, this is the morning to plan around.
While the McKinney Performing Arts Center is closed, the McKinney Repertory Theatre and the Young Actors Guild of McKinney are staging their spring and summer programming at alternate venues, including the Heard-Craig Center for the Arts and First United Methodist Church of Allen. The Heard-Craig itself hosts its Art Meets Fashion luncheon on August 29.
The Friday night map has moved to Hub 121
Four free concerts at Hub 121, 7570 TX-121 S, cover the month. Bring a chair, a blanket, and cash for the food vendors on site.

Two Fridays that same month, TUPPS Brewery hosts its night market on the second and fourth Fridays, August 14 and 28, from 6 to 9 p.m. Local vendors, handmade goods, live music, craft beer. That is a legitimate one-two option: shop the market early, drive to Hub 121 for the concert.
At District 121, the First Friday event on August 7 runs 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. with a Luke Combs cover band, Like Combs, on the schedule. And at The Lion & Crown pub, the Video Music Bingo night mixes song clips with prize rounds if the outdoor concert forecast turns unfriendly.
Three different Friday scenes, all inside a five-minute drive of one another. That has not always been true here.
What has actually opened in the last six months
The pace of restaurant openings is easier to track when you group them by where they landed.
West McKinney and the 121 corridor
- Barrio Tacos, 9401 W. University Drive, Suite 150. The Ohio chain picked McKinney for its first Texas location and opened March 5. Build-your-own tacos with a dozen-plus proteins from cola-marinated steak to Impossible chorizo. Dinner only, 3 to 11 p.m. weekdays and until midnight Friday and Saturday. Franchisee Wissam Saliba paired with local operator Brian Kegley, who came from Melting Pot and The Cheesecake Factory.
- Chen's Kitchen, west McKinney. Authentic Chinese with egg rolls, dumplings, beef stir-fry, chow mein.
- Oak & Stone, a beer-tap concept that recently rolled out "Poptails," cocktails served with a Frios Gourmet Pops popsicle. The Midnight Sun pairs Tito's, St-Germain, blueberry and prosecco with a blackberry ginger lemonade pop.
- The Kebab Shop and a fifth Chipotle with a Chipotlane drive-thru round out the corridor's newer casual options.
Central and East McKinney
- Mom's Iron Wok, 2741 Virginia Parkway, Suite 500. Sichuan cuisine alongside Chinese-American plates, dumplings, potstickers, and a cold "Southern" sweet-potato noodle bowl in soy-vinegar-sesame-chili that reads made for August.
- Stella's Ice Cream opened January 7 with classic and seasonal flavors, sundaes, ice cream sandwiches, and brownies.
- Bojangles landed in March with its Bo-Berry Biscuit.
- Muggzie's Coffee House is the rebranded Ugly Mug, effective April 14, still slinging matcha, tea, coffee, sandwiches, and pastries.
The useful question this August is not "where is new" but "where is worth the drive." For most residents in west and south McKinney, that answer sits along the 121 corridor for the first time.
What is opening next, and what it tells you
The pipeline is where the shift becomes obvious.
AC Hotel McKinney is slated to open on the city's southern border later this year, developed by Peachtree Group. On the fifth floor, Good & Proper Wood Fired Grill will operate with its own separate entrance, serving elevated American fare with Texas inflection at dinner. A destination-restaurant format on the top floor of a Marriott is new territory for this part of town.
Joda Coffee, run by owner Sam Alaqel, is opening in a 2,986-square-foot space at 5975 Ridgeline Drive, Suite 100. Yemeni coffee drinks and refreshers, the kind of specialty concept that used to require a drive to Dallas.
Two more nearby: Potbelly opens in September at 3200 S. Stonebridge Drive, inside the Eldorado Neighborhood Shops development by Plano-based SLX Capital, and Paris Baguette is targeting late 2026 at 5621 S. Custer Road, Suite 201. Pilates Addiction, franchised by Allen residents Naomi and Alex Calle, opens in late summer at 8880 SH 121, Suite 134.
And then there is Cannon Beach. The city broke ground December 15 on a $200 million, 35-acre surf resort at the corner of Stacy Road and SH 121. Developer Cole Cannon is building a full-service resort hotel with event space, a surf lagoon, and a mix of dining, entertainment, and business spaces. First phase is projected for mid-2027. A short drive up 121, the McKinney Sunset Amphitheater by Venu is under construction on a $300 million site and has now shifted its opening to 2027.
Add the reopening of the Performing Arts Center in fall 2026, and the entertainment map by next summer looks materially different from the one on the ground today. This August is the last quiet run before that changeover starts.
Two other things worth putting on your radar
The McKinney Innovation Exchange, launched by the McKinney Economic Development Corp. in February, is a 6,000-square-foot founders' space opening later this year adjacent to MEDC's offices at District 121. Not a public venue, but a signal about who is starting businesses here.
And McKinney Roots, the local farming nonprofit, is moving to a 62-acre site in Gray Branch Park after a May groundbreaking. A 200-tree peach and pear orchard, a hydroponic greenhouse, and a community farm are on the plan.
A weekend blueprint you can actually use
- Saturday morning. Farmers Market at Chestnut Square, then over to the Cotton Mill for the Wonder Women exhibition before it closes August 30. If it is the 15th, park early for the car show.
- Friday night. TUPPS night market on the 14th or 28th, then the Hub 121 concert around the corner.
- Weeknight. Dinner at Mom's Iron Wok or Barrio Tacos, dessert at Stella's.
- Rainy backup. Video Music Bingo at The Lion & Crown.
McKinney is in the middle of a build-out that most residents will feel most acutely in 2027, when Cannon Beach's first phase, the Sunset Amphitheater, and the JW Marriott Resort at Craig Ranch all start to land in the same twelve months. For August 2026, the reward is that the current version of the city still fits on one weekend, and it is a good one.
